Carolyn Lazard

September 13 – October 18, 2025
Opening Friday, September 12, 6–9pm

CLZ at TH

In their first solo exhibition at Trautwein Herleth, Carolyn Lazard examines the scribbles, blank pages, and ocular traces that shape our experiences of critical care. Focusing on the material and administrative tools that reinscribe healthcare's authorial register, the exhibition explores how medical commerce influences medical treatment. Additionally, objects used to dress medical sets in visual culture are recontextualized and rescripted – alienated from their practical use as either props or authentic artifacts. This exhibition probes medicine’s representation of itself, while simultaneously reframing the visual experience of both patient and provider, gesturing toward that which can neither be described nor prescribed.

Carolyn Lazard’s practice explores aesthetic perception, asking viewers to consider where, when, and how artworks are experienced and understood. Spanning the mediums of video, installation, sculpture, and performance, Lazard's work appraises not only the circulation of art in society, but also how society shapes our understanding of value, care, and dependency. Accessibility is central to their practice, serving as both frame and material in their work.

Carolyn Lazard has had solo exhibitions at Artists Space, New York, USA; Walker Art Center, Minneapolis, USA; Institute of Contemporary Art, University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, USA; Nottingham Contemporary, Nottingham, UK; and Kunstverein Braunschweig, Braunschweig, Germany. Their work has been exhibited at institutions including Museum Für Moderne Kunst, Frankfurt, Germany; Museum of Modern Art, New York, USA; mumok, Vienna, Austria; Para Site, Hong Kong. Their work was included in the 2019 and 2024 Whitney Biennial of American Art and the 2022 Venice Biennale. Their recent film, Fiction Contract, 2025, is included in the upcoming 63rd New York Film Festival and 50th Toronto International Film Festival. Lazard is a 2023 MacArthur Fellow.
